Soundtoys Launches SpaceBlender: A New Reverb Modulation Beast as a FREEBIE

Soundtoys has just dropped a new plugin called SpaceBlender, and if you’re into spacious, modulated reverbs with movement and grit, this one’s worth a closer look.

Think of SpaceBlender as a mashup between a reverb and a modulation unit—but on steroids. It’s got a dual-engine architecture with two independent reverb processors, A and B. You can load up different algorithms on each—like plates, springs, chambers, granular washes—and then morph between them with a dedicated Blender control. That alone makes it stand out from most bread-and-butter reverb plugins.

The modulation side is where things get wild. SpaceBlender lets you modulate nearly every key parameter using its built-in LFOs and envelope followers. Want a reverb that pulsates with your track’s dynamics or shifts textures in sync with the beat? No problem.

It also features:

  • Per-engine controls: Tailor each reverb with filters, decay, size, and character settings.
  • Dynamic response: Reacts to audio input, great for rhythmic and expressive FX.
  • Creative presets: From lo-fi dub echoes to lush ambient swells.

GUI-wise, it’s what you’d expect from Soundtoys: clean, tweakable, and fun. The plugin is available in VST, AU, and AAX formats, and if you own the Soundtoys 5 bundle, you can grab it as a paid upgrade.

Is it just another reverb? Nope. It’s more like a reverb that went through a blender, an LFO, and a bit of cosmic interference. If you like the unpredictability and texture-twisting sound design tools, SpaceBlender might be your new secret weapon.

If you’re into SpaceBlender, here’s a list of similar creative reverb/modulation hybrids and experimental spatial FX that bring movement, morphing, or modulation to the reverb game:

Modulated & Dual-Reverb Style Plugins

  1. Eventide Blackhole
    • Cosmic, infinite-style reverb with pitch shifting and modulation.
    • Great for ambient, sound design, and otherworldly effects.
  2. Valhalla Supermassive(Free!)
    • Delay/reverb hybrid with lush feedback networks and modulation.
    • Excellent for huge stereo washes and rhythmic echoes.
  3. u-he Twangström
    • Spring reverb with modulation, LFOs, and drive.
    • More niche but very tweakable and vibey.
  4. Unfiltered Audio TAILS
    • Real-time reverb tail generator with spectral freeze and modulation.
    • Very creative and CPU-friendly.
  5. AudioThing Fog Convolver 2
    • Convolution reverb with morphing IRs and modulation via envelopes/LFOs.
    • Good for weird, evolving textures.
  6. Baby Audio Crystalline
    • Clean, modulated algorithmic reverb with controls for shimmer, width, and “sparkle.”
    • Less dirty than SpaceBlender, more polished and modern.
  7. SoundParticles Density
    • Granular-based reverb/ensemble processor.
    • Generates multiple voices for a massive, animated feel.

More Modulation-Focused Sound Design FX

  1. Output Portal
    • Granular FX with tempo-synced modulation and reverb-like textures.
    • Not a traditional reverb, but incredible for transforming space.
  2. Imaginando FRMS
    • Granular synth with reverb/modulation routing.
    • Great for ambient and soundscape layering.
